History of Sock Making In USA & Why We Love Maggie’s 100% Organic Socks

| 0 min read

Historically, sock making and clothing manufacturing in general were prominent across the United States.

in the early 2000s, with the growth of outsourcing, the majority of made in USA sock companies moved overseas and started using synthetic materials. When City Threads started searching for an organic cotton socks partner, made in the USA was an important factor.

But since most sock companies moved their manufacturing overseas years ago, it was challenging to find a partner who both makes socks locally and uses organic natural fiber yarns. After searching far and wide for a company that still knits socks in the USA, we discovered Maggie’s – a pioneer in the organic space, who has been making socks in the USA since 1992.

Here’s some of the reasons why we love Maggie’s and their Organic Cotton Socks –

  • Maggie’s Values Transparency
As a company, Maggie’s is hyper-focused on transparency – they share as much information as possible with their shoppers, and are committed to ethical practices from farm to finish.

  • Traceable Organic Cotton
Maggie’s organic cotton can be traced back to the farm – it is grown in Tanzania in partnership with the bioRe Foundation and ginned nearby. The fiber is spun in Tanzania at Sunflag, which is SA-8000, OEKO-TEX and Global Organic Textile Standard certified.

  • Socks Are Knit By Family Knitters
Maggie’s is focused on supporting local businesses, and keeping integral parts of their sock making in the USA. We love that their organic socks are knit by independent family knitters and then dyed and finished in North Carolina using low-impact dyes.
  • Maggie’s Developed Their Real Fair Trade Pledge
Certifications can be helpful, but they can also, at times, fall short. When Maggie’s felt that industry certifications weren’t enough, they created their Real Fair Trade pledge, which reflects their dedication to continually examine every aspect of their business and be honest with their customers along the way.

  • Comfort As with everything we offer at City Threads, comfort is integral to all of the products we showcase. Maggie’s organic socks meet the mark on comfort and we’re so excited to share their soft and cozy styles with you.
